Canadian Angler @ Large
I have been very heavily into fishin' just about all of my life. It's always been like a very special type of natural medicine for me, that keeps me sane in this kind of wild and wacky world of to-day. Although I have caught almost every type of freshwater game and panfish, over the years, my favorite of all fish to pursue is the bass. Largemouth or small, I love 'em all. I grew up on the small jawed variety from the clear-water lakes in the Sudbury area of Northern Ontario. We don't have any spotted bass up here that we know of so I've yet to land one of those scrappers. Some of the best fishin' battles I have ever experienced have been with brawling largemouth bass in shallow weedy and brush filled areas of lakes and rivers. At times these wild creatures can and will hit your bait like a freight train. Hogs can sound like someone threw a three hole cinder block in the lake. It's sometimes frightening when they bust a surface lure only ten or fifteen feet away from your rodtip. Lily pads, duckweed, moss and gooey gobs of slop fly everywhere, including in your face, when those big, brutal, battling beasts attack, at close range like that! Talk about getting in your face!!! At other times, these mostly seclusive and very cool wild critters can slurp a surface bait so quietly, you wouldn't even know they were there, if you hadn't been watching real close-like and actually seen the bait simply disappear from where it was only a split second before...! I find it amazing, that it is STILL the actual VISUAL attack of a marauding largemouth bass on the surface, that it's all about for this 'ol dude. Swishin' a Zara along at a fair pace or Gurgling a triple blade buzzer at a decent clip, can and will provoke AWESOME explosive charges from very hostile bass. It won't take too many of these WILD ATTACKS for you to get hooked on this exciting form of fishing too. I can GUARANTEE it!!!!Even when you don't get a good hook up, the excitement level going on during one of these crashing, smashing strikes are definetly adrenaline pumping stuff and could be cause for a heart attack. I can see it all now. Poor 'ol Fred, may his soul rest in peace, done had a massive BassAttack out on Lake Hogfish yesterday. He was out testin' his new fandangeled buzzin' bait dressed with a downright dirty piece of sowbelly stuck on the hook for a little extra enticement. Turns out he should have left the pork off that already deadly hogkiller with the bionic blastblipper subsonic super slit micro-holed and finely tweaked alloy blade. If you wanna add PIGGY to your hot lures, you had better make sure your heart is in good condition or at least your insurance is up to date. The stuff definately makes them 'ol Bassies MAD!!
A large part of catching fish, any kind of fish by the way, consistantly, is having a good positive mental attitude. In fact once you attain a lot of experience, it is EVERYTHING. Don't let negative stuff mess you up. Do not dwell on negative things. They will only get bigger. Turn everything into a positive thing. Hang with positive people, especially with folks that seem to always catch a lot of fish!! Keep feeding your knowledge banks everytime you are out there on the lake or river and maintain your attitude about getting better all the time. Apply what you are learning and remember what works. Positive thinking creates positive results...... As this years open water season came to a close, I hooked and landed two Musky in the 15 to 18 pound range, from my little homelake. I actually hooked 5 fish but 3 came undone in the first few seconds of the strike. Two Musky in three days is nothing spectacular except for the fact that these fish were all caught from shore in less than six feet of water in a three day period, on customized artificial lures. No matter how many bass I catch, there is a certain kind of magic to witnessing a fish that is over 3 feet long, leaping out of the water and thrashing the surface to a froth when it splashes down again. :-) It was a great way to end the year for this 'ol fishin' dude.
